Child Of Our Time

BBC · 2001–2020 · Editor

I edited a series of fifteen character-led films to accompany the final episode of Child of Our Time, marking the conclusion of a project that followed a group of children born in 2000 through to adulthood in 2020.

The material spanned two decades: archive programmes, extensive additional footage, user-generated content captured by the contributors themselves, and a final reflective interview with each individual.

Rather than relying on a purely chronological structure, the editorial approach focused on shaping each person’s emotional journey — their growth, setbacks and defining moments — across twenty years of change. This allowed each film to reflect the individuality of the contributor, avoiding a one-size-fits-all narrative and giving space to the very different experiences of growing up at the start of the millennium in the UK.

The aim was to honour the contributors’ stories with care and clarity, balancing editorial craft with sensitivity to how these lives had been lived and shared over time. The project reflects my approach to factual storytelling: finding the human story within complexity, questioning default formats, and shaping narratives that serve both the audience and the people at the centre of the film.
