Nesta, The Alan Turing Institute, Abcam & Red Bicycle · 2019–2026 · Producer, Director & Creator

I create original podcasts, produce established series and develop sizzle packages for commissioners. But increasingly my work is about leading the people and thinking behind the work, not only making it. At the Turing I ran a podcast working group, directing a designer, a social media manager and a production assistant, and worked alongside the public engagement co-lead on comms planning and horizon scanning for the head of events and engagement. I directed recordings, booked and briefed guests, fact-checked scripts with researchers and experts, and worked with the head of comms to keep what we made aligned to the Institute's values. I also led the thinking behind the shows: running listener workshops for qualitative insight and analysing our data to understand who was listening and how to reach more people like them. I care most about retention, growing engaged, returning listeners by giving them more of what they value rather than chasing clicks. It's the listener I'm serving.

The Policy Fix: Andy Burnham's First 100 Days

Context

The Policy Fix is Nesta's flagship policy podcast, bringing together leading thinkers, researchers and decision-makers to explore practical solutions to society's biggest challenges. Shortly after joining Nesta as Group Content Production Manager, I was asked to produce a special mini-series ahead of Andy Burnham's first one hundred days as Prime Minister. The concept originated with Nesta's CEO, and the ambition was to respond while the political conversation was still unfolding. We had around two weeks to develop the format before recording began, followed by three weeks to produce, edit and publish the entire series while continuing to release supporting content across social platforms.

Challenge

The challenge was not simply producing a podcast. It was designing a production process capable of delivering high-quality video and audio episodes at the pace of the news cycle. The series involved coordinating senior internal stakeholders, booking high-profile external guests, directing contributors during recording and maintaining a consistent editorial tone across seven episodes, all while turning content around quickly enough to remain timely. As my first major project at Nesta, it was also a chance to establish trust, introduce new production methods and show what an in-house content team could deliver.

Approach

I led production from initial planning through to publication. Working closely with the CEO, I helped develop the editorial approach, booked guests and planned recordings around demanding schedules. The series was recorded over five studio days, with as many as three episodes filmed in a single day. Production was built around a three-camera video workflow using an in-house studio. I directed contributors throughout each recording, aiming to create conversations that felt natural while keeping discussions focused and accessible. Alongside the series itself, I developed the existing studio into a more premium space and introduced a faster, more repeatable workflow. Live vision mixing using Blackmagic ATEM, integrated audio through Rodecaster and templated Adobe editing significantly reduced turnaround while maintaining quality, and left the team with systems they could keep using. Each episode was released as both a full video podcast and an audio podcast, supported by more than thirty social edits designed to extend the reach of each conversation across multiple platforms. Guests included Baroness Beeban Kidron OBE, Dan Neidle, Tony Curzon Price, Arun Advani, Mallory Durran, Hugo Harper and Tim Leunig.

Impact

Within my first month at Nesta, I delivered a seven-episode mini-series matching the number of episodes produced across the previous six-month run of The Policy Fix, while introducing new studio workflows. The series generated strong early engagement and continues to grow as additional clips are released.

The project established production systems that will continue to support future editions of The Policy Fix. I also contributed to a half-day workshop on how the series could be streamlined and improved, and several of those ideas are being carried into its next season. Feedback from senior leadership highlighted both the improved production quality and the speed at which episodes moved from recording to publication.

Too Long Didn't Read

Too Long Didn't Read is a public engagement podcast I developed at The Alan Turing Institute in response to the growing noise around AI and the lack of calm, accessible discussion for a general audience. The idea originated outside the formal content plan, so the first challenge was making the case internally for an in-house podcast with a distinctive editorial voice. I developed the concept, produced a pilot and brought in AI ethics researcher Smera Jayadeva as co-host, building the format around genuine conversation between a curious non-expert, myself, and a researcher. Rather than positioning researchers as lecturers, the podcast encouraged real questions and thoughtful discussion, and I brought colleagues and contributors with me into a format the Institute hadn't tried before. From there I led the series from concept to publication. Alongside producing and editing, I developed the editorial format, researched topics, wrote scripts, interviewed researchers and external guests, and expanded the series to include live recordings at AI UK. Episodes explored subjects ranging from digital death and online remains to AI-generated politicians, misinformation and the "dead internet" theory. Too Long Didn't Read became one of the Institute's best-known public engagement projects and helped establish new ways of using podcasts, YouTube Shorts and community content alongside live events and wider communications. It showed how long-form conversation could build understanding and public trust around emerging technologies.

Other podcast work

Alongside leading original and established podcast series, I've also worked with organisations and production companies to develop new podcast concepts and strengthen existing ones. For production company Red Bicycle I developed podcast sizzle packages for commissioners, shaping interviews and supporting material into concise pitch films that communicated the editorial proposition and tone of a potential series. For Abcam I helped develop the visual identity for the organisation's podcast as part of a wider digital programme, creating style guides, motion graphics and templates for audiograms and other social assets so each conversation could reach audiences well beyond the podcast itself.

Across these projects the throughline has been the same: developing editorial ideas, building production workflows and creating content that connects with the right audience. Whether launching an original public engagement podcast, producing conversations with senior policymakers or helping shape new podcast concepts, my focus is on making complex subjects engaging, accessible and worth people's time.
